NHL unveils 2024-22 schedule with realigned divisions, debut of Seattle Kraken

The NHL has announced the schedule for its 2024-22 season, which will feature the debut of an expansion team in Seattle and realignment of the divisions.

The National Hockey League (NHL) announced today, October 16, the complete schedule for the 2024-22 season, which will kick off on October 3, 2024 and conclude on April 1, 2024. The 2019-20 season will be the last under the current alignment, which saw the alignment of the Stanley Cup champions and the Eastern Conference and Western Conference winners, the 15th and 16th seeds of the playoffs.

The NHL was expected to announce their schedule for the 2024-22 season on Wednesday, and the schedule is official! There are some big changes in store. The NHL has introduced a new divisional format to the league, and the divisional lineup will be a realignment of the conferences. The new format will pit teams in northern divisions against teams in the southern divisions. The teams in the north will be divided into three conferences (Atlantic, Metropolitan and Central), while the teams in the south will be divided into four conferences (Metropolitan, Central, Pacific and Atlantic). Teams will be competing against the teams in their own division and in the same conference, while also playing the teams in the other divisions in the conference they are in. The new format

On Thursday night, the NHL announced its regular-season schedule for 2024-22, which includes reconfigured divisions, a rebalanced schedule, and a long Olympic break if the league’s players compete in the 2024 Beijing Olympics.

The NHL will play a full 82-game regular season after playing 56 games in 2024-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the new schedule, which was revealed on SportsCenter.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, Oct. 12, with the latter raising their Stanley Cup title flag.If you plan ahead and check the Penguins’ schedule, you may discover good deals on tickets and take the kids to a game without breaking the bank.

The new Seattle Kraken will also play their first game when they travel to Las Vegas to face the Vegas Golden Knights, the league’s other recent expansion club. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ as part of an opening-night doubleheader.

The 1,312-game regular season comes to a close on April 29, with 30 of the league’s 32 clubs competing.

Starting on February 3, there will be a major gap in the calendar, which will feature both NHL All-Star Weekend and an Olympic break. The 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend will take place in Las Vegas on February 4-5. The Olympic break starts on February 7 and ends on February 22.

In its collective bargaining agreement with the players last summer, the NHL committed to strive for a return to the Olympics. The NHLPA and the International Ice Hockey Federation are now negotiating on remaining problems, including adequate COVID-19 insurance for NHL players in Beijing. If the NHL or the NHLPA decide not to participate in the Olympics, a revised regular-season calendar will be published, attempting to match the existing schedule’s dates and games.

The league’s teams revert to the alignment they had in the 2019-20 season, with the Metropolitan and Atlantic divisions in the Eastern Conference and the Central and Pacific divisions in the Western Conference, as the temporary divisions from last season, including the All-Canadian North Division, are gone.

The Kraken will join the Pacific Division as the NHL’s 32nd franchise. Beginning next season, the Arizona Coyotes will play in the Central Division.

The inclusion of the Kraken to the NHL’s calendar threw the league’s schedule into disarray. Each club will play one home and one away game against opponents from the opposing conference, three games against teams from their league’s other division, and either four or three games against teams from their own division.

The NHL decided not to continue having multi-game “homestands” for clubs playing the same opponent in the same location, which were a popular feature of the 2024-21 schedule.

“I know the coaches enjoyed it, and the players had some free time to do it. When you have to do it for a whole season, it may become a little tedious. There was a sliver of interest in doing further testing with it, but the schedulers were in a tight spot “Kevin Cheveldayoff, Winnipeg’s general manager, said. “When we were in a COVID scenario and there were no building problems, I believe it was a lot simpler. You’ve got multi-tenant teams, concerts, and all the other great things we’ve missed. That, I believe, came into play when they attempted to put it to use [this season].”

The following are some of the important dates in the NHL’s 2024-22 schedule:

  • On Saturday, October 23, the Kraken take on the Vancouver Canucks in their inaugural home game at Climate Pledge Arena.
  • Saturday, Nov. 20: The New York Islanders return home to inaugurate the new UBS Arena against the Calgary Flames after spending their first 13 games on the road.
  • The Montreal Canadiens take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in a repeat of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday, December 7.
  • Saturday, January 1: The 2024 Winter Classic takes place at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, with the Wild hosting the St. Louis Blues in a game that was postponed from the previous season.
  • Saturday, Feb. 26: The Lightning will play the Nashville Predators in a Stadium Series game at Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans, becoming the 27th NHL club to play in an outdoor game.

Beginning with the 2024-22 season, 75 exclusive national NHL game telecasts will be accessible on ESPN+ and Hulu, and ESPN+ will be the official home for the NHL’s out-of-market streaming package, with over 1,000 games available to fans as part of an ESPN+ membership.

The NHL and NHLPA announced yesterday the creation of two new divisions (the Atlantic and Pacific) that will split the league into four eight-team conferences, with six teams apiece in each conference. In addition, the NHL will eliminate the current home-and-home set ups and implement a fixed schedule that features a balanced mix of home and away games. The new season will begin on September 15, 2024, and finish on April 3, 2024. The regular season will begin on Saturday’s and finish on Tuesday’s on weeknights. There will be no conference playoffs..
