24 Hours In A&E announced major relocation plans as show leaves London

The news that a popular television show will soon move from London to Los Angeles has left many fans reeling, including fans of the Emergency Ward. The hit show, which follows the work of an A&E-like hospital in the UK, will be filming its final series in the UK which will last for two years.

The BBC’s acclaimed medical drama “Casualty” is leaving its London home for a new set in Cardiff.  The show, which has been filming at the Portland Place studios in central London since its inception in 1986, will move to a new set in the capital.  The show is set in the fictional Holby City hospital, which is now a teaching hospital in the city.  The relocation is set to take place in late 2017.

In April, I worked in A&E at University College London Hospital. I helped the doctors and nurses there deal with the injuries and illnesses that patients brought in to the hospital. I helped them diagnose and treat some very painful and difficult conditions.

Channel 4’s 24 Hours In A&E is set for a huge move, with the programme relocating from London to Nottingham.

The documentary series will celebrate its tenth year by moving to the Queen’s Medical Centre teaching hospital this fall, after a two-year move out of the city.

24 Hours In A&E offers viewers a look inside the country’s busiest accident and emergency departments.

It began broadcasting in 2011 from King’s College Hospital in south London, then moved to St George’s Hospital in 2014, also in south London.

Behind-the-scenes production on the series has been taking place in the north of England in recent years. The Garden, a production firm based in London, will now relocate the remaining behind-the-scenes work to its Leeds office.

Channel 4 announced in 2019 that it will relocate its headquarters to the Yorkshire city.

24 Hours In A&E has become one of the most popular documentary series on the channel, having aired more than 250 episodes across 24 series.

Dr Keith Girling, medical director at Nottingham University Hospitals, said: ‘We are incredibly excited that Channel 4 have chosen the Queen’s Medical Centre as the new home of their twice Bafta-nominated and Royal Television Society award-winning 24 Hours In A&E.

‘Because we have one of the country’s largest major trauma centers and our emergency department sees over 6,000 patients every day, there will be lots of fascinating patient and staff tales to witness.’

‘This will allow us to demonstrate our teams’ commitment, enthusiasm, and ability, as well as the care and compassion given to our emergency patients.

‘We understand there is a great deal of pride in what we do, and we will be able to show the world (literally) who makes up Team NUH.’

‘It’s been a great pleasure to be the commissioner for this wonderful series for the past six years,’ said Rita Daniels, documentaries commissioning editor.

‘I am ecstatic that we will once again be able to marvel at the NHS’s great job in a new area of the nation, as well as see and appreciate the extraordinary care provided to its patients inside this life-saving department.’

Dr Phil Moss, consultant in emergency medicine at St George’s, said: ’24 Hours In A&E has been an incredible experience for St George’s.

‘It has been a pleasure to present such a highly successful documentary series since 2014, which offers the public an intimate look at the day-to-day operations of a busy south London emergency department.’

‘Its success would not have been possible without the dedication and support of our incredible St George’s staff, who go above and beyond in their jobs every day.’

‘We have truly become known as being the home of 24 Hours In A&E and while we will be sad to see it go, we are so proud of what it has achieved in its seven-year period at St George’s and we wish it continued success in Nottingham.’

24 Hours In A&E is available to stream on All4.

While the show “24 hours in A&E” is leaving London, the hospital itself is not, which should give any viewer pause. The hospital has announced plans to move from the West End to Guy’s Hospital, in Southwark in SE1. The plan is to move by 2014 and create a new ward, a new emergency department and rebuild another patient ward. The move is likely to create 200 new jobs – although it is not clear where they will come from. The hospital will use its new site to build a new A&E department. It will also create a 50 bed ward and the 120 bed site will become the main part of the new emergency department and treatment centre..
